Virgin Atlantic Suspends 787 Flights to This US City in Winter 2026

LONDON- Virgin Atlantic (VS) will suspend its London Heathrow (LHR) to Seattle-Tacoma (SEA) route during the Northern winter 2026/27 season. The British carrier has closed reservations for travel between 25 October 2026 and 27 March 2027.

The airline previously operated one daily flight on the transatlantic sector using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The seasonal pullback removes a year-round link between London (LHR) and Seattle (SEA) for nearly five months, with services expected to align with the Northern summer 2027 schedule reinstatement.

In a groundbreaking achievement, Virgin Atlantic (VA) and Rolls-Royce have confirmed the successful ground test of the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine, utilizing a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blend.

Virgin Atlantic Suspends Flights to Seattle

Virgin Atlantic will pause its London Heathrow to Seattle operation for the entire Northern winter 2026/27 timetable. The carrier closed bookings for departures from 25 October 2026, which marks the start of the IATA winter season, through 27 March 2027.

The route had been served daily as part of Virgin Atlantic’s transatlantic network. The suspension period covers 154 days, removing both the eastbound and westbound rotations during the off-peak demand window for leisure travel between the United Kingdom and the Pacific Northwest.

The airline has not confirmed whether the route will return for the Northern summer 2027 season. Bookings beyond 27 March 2027 remain open at the time of reporting, suggesting a seasonal rather than permanent withdrawal.

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Deployment

Virgin Atlantic deployed the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the London to Seattle route. The aircraft type seats passengers across Upper Class, Premium, and Economy cabins on the carrier’s twin-aisle fleet.

The 787-9 offers fuel efficiency suited to long, thin transatlantic routes, with a range capable of supporting the 7,700-kilometre sector between Heathrow and Seattle.

The aircraft features composite construction, lower cabin altitude, and larger windows for the roughly nine-hour westbound flight, Aeroroutes reported.

Route Network Context

Seattle has been part of Virgin Atlantic’s North American network, complementing the carrier’s flights to Atlanta, Boston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York JFK, Orlando, San Francisco, Tampa, and Washington Dulles.

The Pacific Northwest market connects strongly to technology and leisure travel demand from the United Kingdom.

The winter suspension reflects seasonal demand patterns on the route. Pacific Northwest travel from the United Kingdom typically peaks during the summer cruise season, when Seattle serves as a gateway to Alaska itineraries departing from the city’s port.

Booking Information for Affected Passengers

Passengers holding reservations for travel between 25 October 2026 and 27 March 2027 will need to contact Virgin Atlantic for rebooking, refund, or rerouting options. The carrier maintains codeshare and joint venture agreements with Delta Air Lines (DL), Air France (AF), and KLM (KL) under the SkyTeam transatlantic joint venture.

Affected travellers may rebook on Delta Air Lines services from Seattle to other European hubs, including Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) and Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), with onward connections to London. Direct alternatives between Seattle and London during the suspension period include British Airways (BA) and Delta Air Lines.
