Sydney Airport to Get New Flight from One of the Best Airline in the World

SYDNEY— Taiwanese carrier STARLUX Airlines will launch direct flights between Sydney Airport (SYD) and Taipei in 2027, creating a second nonstop link between the two cities and expanding travel options between Australia and Taiwan.

The new route will make Sydney the first Australian destination served by STARLUX Airlines (JX). The carrier also plans to extend the service onward to Auckland, strengthening connectivity across the Asia-Pacific region and increasing competition on the Sydney–Taipei market.

STARLUX New Sydney Route

STARLUX confirmed that Sydney has been selected as its inaugural Australian gateway as the airline continues its international expansion strategy. While the final operating schedule and launch date are yet to be announced, the service is expected to begin in 2027 and will directly compete with China Airlines (CI) on the route.

The launch comes as demand for travel between Sydney and Taipei continues to grow.

According to airport data, Taiwan ranked among Sydney’s fastest-growing international travel markets in 2025, with passenger traffic reaching nearly 194,000 travelers, representing an 18 percent increase compared to the previous year, Australian Aviation flagged.

Industry analysts view the route as an important development because Taipei serves as a major regional hub. Passengers traveling from Sydney can access a broad network of onward connections throughout Asia, Europe, Japan, and North America through Taiwan’s capital.

New Route Helps Taiwan Travel Growth

The new service reflects broader growth trends across the Asia-Pacific aviation market. Airlines continue to expand capacity in response to rising leisure and business travel demand, particularly on routes linking Australia with key Asian destinations.

STARLUX has rapidly established itself as a premium carrier since launching operations in 2020. The airline has focused on delivering a high-end passenger experience while steadily expanding its network across Asia and selected long-haul markets.

Company executives said the Sydney route will strengthen economic and tourism links between Australia and Taiwan. The airline also expects the service to support travelers seeking convenient connections beyond Taipei to destinations throughout the region.

The planned Auckland extension would further enhance the route’s strategic value by linking Australia, Taiwan, and New Zealand through a single service. Such connectivity is increasingly important as airlines seek to capture growing demand across the South Pacific and Asia-Pacific markets.

Sydney Airport is Expanding as Well

The STARLUX announcement follows a period of strong international growth for Sydney Airport.

During the first quarter of 2026, the airport handled a record 4.57 million international passengers despite geopolitical challenges affecting some global travel markets.

New Zealand and mainland China remained Sydney’s largest international markets during the quarter, recording year-over-year growth of 13.5 percent and 14 percent, respectively.

Several major Asian destinations also posted substantial gains, reflecting sustained demand across the region.

Passenger traffic to and from Kuala Lumpur increased by more than 32 percent, while Guangzhou recorded growth exceeding 38 percent.

Travel through Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Seoul also continued to rise, supported by increased airline capacity and strong consumer demand.
